Firefighters Burn Institute

Mission Statement

The Firefighters Burn Institute is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by the Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 in 1973, for the purpose of establishing a local burn treatment facility; providing recovery programs for burn survivors; providing fire and burn prevention through public education; funding education for burn team professionals, firefighters, and burn survivors; and supporting burn treatment and rehabilitation research.

Be The Match & Oakland Firefighters Random Acts

Be The Match is partnering with Oakland Firefighters Random ActsSan Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation and Bay Area Fire Departments (Albany, Berkeley, Contra Costa, El Cerrito, Oakland, Redwood City, Richmond, San Francisco, and San Jose) to launch the inaugural Firefighters Challenge.

The mission of the Be The Match Firefighters Challenge is to increase the number of marrow donors on the registry, raise funds to support patients and research, increase awareness and build community. This 8 week donor recruitment and fundraising competition kicks off August 10th. The Challenge will end on September 30th.

Due to occupational exposures, Firefighters have a known higher risk of developing cancer. By raising funds and recruiting marrow donors, Firefighters are supporting a cause that may one day save themselves or the life of a colleague. In addition, through this competition the local fire departments will engage community and build morale among our local heroes while serving the greater good.

Portland Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge

Wes Loucks, a retired Portland Fire & Rescue firefighter of 32 years, and his wife Belinda founded the Portland Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge when both of his grandsons were born with Cystic Fibrosis.

The Portland Firefighter Stairclimb is a competitive race up 40 floors and 800 steps of the U.S. Bancorp Tower. Firefighters will be outfitted in over 70 lbs. of full "Combat Gear" including Self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) commonly used in the line of duty. Racers compete for individual titles in both men and women categories.

In addition climbers compete to raise funds in the battle against Cystic Fibrosis. Since 2009 hundreds of firefighters from across the country and Canada have come to Portland to compete in our event and have raised over $600,000 in the fight to beat Cystic Fibrosis and make CF stand for "CURE FOUND".

We are proud to list as our sponsors MSA (The Safety Company) Title Sponsor, Portland Firefighters Association Local 43, Presenting Sponsor, UNICO and U.S. Bancorp Tower, Leatherman Tool Group, Kaiser Permanente, as well as many others.
